How It Started: A Mother’s Discovery
It all began subtly, as these things often do. My son, being a bit quiet and susceptible to peer pressure, initially started coming home, and I noticed little changes. It turned out that Aaron Kelly, who I’d actually met a few times and thought was just a polite, quiet lad – never in a million years would I have suspected him of anything – had started selling him cannabis, or ‘weed’ as they call it.
At first, it was just the weed, and as a parent, you’re always hopeful it’s just a phase, or something they’ll quickly grow out of. But then, things took a much darker turn. I overheard my son talking about “Mandy” with Aaron, and for ages, I honestly just thought it was a new girl they were interested in. I even made a few jokes about it, completely oblivious.
To my absolute horror and dismay, I eventually discovered that “Mandy” wasn’t a girl at all. It was MDMA. Not only was Aaron dealing MDMA to my vulnerable son, but he was also supplying it to other kids in our neighbourhood. To think that someone I’d let into my home, someone who seemed so unassuming, was actively preying on vulnerable children like mine and pushing them deeper into the world of drugs is a living nightmare.

As if the drug dealing wasn’t horrifying enough, my world was rocked again when I discovered another layer to Aaron Kelly’s activities. It wasn’t just through my son, but also his friendship group and another mum whose son was unfortunately another one of Mr. Kelly’s “clients.”
I found out that Aaron Kelly and his friend Alfie Atterbury actually planned the robbery of Sameres Stores. This happened back in March 2018. The terrifying truth is that while Aaron didn’t physically participate in the knife-point robbery on the day – it was only Alfie Atterbury who went in – Aaron was very much behind the planning of it. He was deeply involved in setting the whole thing up, even if he wasn’t there when it happened. He was lucky he wasn’t caught then, but it just goes to show the true character of this young man.

I’ve shared my story here in the hope that it will arm other parents with the knowledge they need to protect their own children.
Please, talk to your children. Be vigilant about who they are spending time with and what they are doing. If you know Aaron Kelly, or if your children encounter him, please encourage them to stay away. His actions have had a devastating impact on my family, and I wouldn’t wish this nightmare on anyone else. Let’s work together as a community to keep our children safe from individuals like him.
